The focus of our research are Surface layer (S-layers) proteins, crystalline protein coats displayed on the surface of many bacterial and archaeal species. They provide a large surface area for interactions with host cells which has significant implications for immune response and human disease. We use integrative structural biology approach for structural and functional characterization of e.g. lactobacilli S-layer and their interactions with human receptors. In addition, we apply structure prediction methods for the prediction of repetitive structures as in the case of S-layers.
