Diagnostik & Forschungszentrum für Molekulare BioMedizin

Founded at the Medical University of Graz in 2018, the Diagnostic and Research Center for Molecular BioMedicine pools the competences of four institutes. The researchers at our center work on exploring the complex interaction between genetic and environmental mechanisms of disease by considering environmental factors such as nutrition, exercise and stress and exogenous factors such as toxins, pathogens and trauma (self-inflicted and external). In this connection, a special role is played by the microbiome, which is responsible for how our food is metabolized and how the immune system is activated. It is influenced by the individual genetic constellation of a human being and by environmental factors such as exposure to microorganisms and diet. This complex relationship is investigated on the level of the genome, transcriptome, metabolome and the 3-dimensional architectural relationship of these components (morphome).
