Doctoral programs

PhD programs and doctoral studies prepare the next generation of researchers for independent research in medicine, the life sciences and nursing science. They combine scientific mentoring with state-of-the-art techniques and an extensive training program (seminars, journal clubs, workshops, academic networking) in an integrative research environment.

PhD Program

The international PhD program at the Medical University of Graz provides a multidisciplinary cutting-edge doctoral education as a key element contributing to the development of biomedical sciences through an independent research.

All our PhD programs offer high-level scientific training in basic principles of human diseases and therapeutics. Research topics focus on various aspects of cardiac, vascular and metabolic diseases, inflammation, cancer, and stem cells. The education combines scientific mentoring with a research environment that integrates basic, applied and clinical sciences. The wide spectrum of state-of-the-art techniques is complemented with extensive training activities, such as seminars, journal clubs, transferable skills courses, technical workshops, and scientific networking.

Our mission is that graduates are able to pursue their future careers either in academia or industry, and can be equally successful in the fields of training, research & development or marketing.

Doctoral program in Medical Sciences

The Doctoral Program in Medical Science trains students to become independent reseachers in biomedical and especially clinical research. Offered as part of seven interdisciplinary doctoral schools (doc schools), the degree program can be completed while the student is employed.

Doctoral Program in Nursing Science

The independent research by students in the Doctoral Program in Nursing Science assists in the development of nursing science and prepares them to be junior researchers in the field of nursing science.

The doctoral program is offered in cooperation with Maastricht University, the Netherlands, and with the support of Bern University of Applied Sciences, Switzerland.

Olivia Nonn

"After I finished my medicine degree program, I had good experiences in the women's clinic research lab, which made me decide to start the PhD program in the same area. Even if it is an unusual decision, I would make it again because of the exciting possibilities and experiences in basic research."

Olivia Nonn, PhD student at the Gottfried Schatz Research Center
