Tenure track professorships: A big boost for science

The position is initially limited to six years, during which the goals of the qualification agreement must be met. If the candidate demonstrates outstanding and remarkable achievements, an evaluation of the qualification agreement may be possible sooner. When the defined goals have been achieved, an unlimited term contract as an associate professor is concluded, which entails belonging to the professorial curia as well as taking on responsibility for one's own field of research. Tenure Track Professor of Innovative Cancer Cell Analysis

We are looking for an excellent researcher with great potential to develop an internationally recognized research agenda in the field of molecular oncology with a special focus on single-cell analysis of ion signaling and cancer cell energy metabolism. The successful candidate is expected to conduct research and teach in the fields of molecular biology and biochemistry with a focus on tumor biology. The new position will complement the research activities of the Division of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at the Gottfried Schatz Research Center and the Division of Oncology. The initial appointment is limited to six years. After the conclusion of a qualification agreement, the career advancement goal is to transfer to a tenured position as an associate professor (tenure track professor pursuant to § 99 para. 5 and 6 of the Universities Act). If the candidate demonstrates outstanding and remarkable achievements, the qualification agreement may be fulfilled more quickly.


Core duties and responsibilities:

  • Conducting groundbreaking cancer cell research with a special focus on comprehensive analysis of single cancer cell ion signals and metabolic and signal transduction pathways using clinically relevant tumor models and primary cell material
  • Advancing novel therapeutic approaches and drug discovery/development through the bioengineering of modern high-resolution methods based on the use and development of fluorescent biosensors and genetic tools
  • Establishing and leading an internationally recognized research group
  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, supervising diploma and PhD students and mentoring and promoting young researchers
  • Acquiring third-party funding and taking the lead in such research projects
  • Writing and publishing high-quality scientific papers in reputable journals
  • Establishing and maintaining networks through local, national and international research collaborations
  • Giving lectures and seminars, actively contributing to conferences, hosting visitors and organizing conferences
  • Supporting scientific and public outreach in the research area (public lectures, media, etc.)
  • Actively participating in the organization and management of the Division of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry as well as the Division of Oncology, including on matters related to research and teaching


Successful candidates must have the following qualifications:

  • PhD or MD/PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, molecular medicine or a related field
  • Research expertise in the field of cancer pathobiology and cancer metabolism research with a special focus on the application and development of (fluorescent) protein-based tools and electrophysiology
  • Proven track record of high-quality publications and peer-reviewed research grants or other third-party funding as the lead or principal investigator
  • Experience in research grant management and supervisions
  • Previous experience in teaching and/or (co)supervising pre- and postgraduate students (depending on the applicant’s career stage)
  • Postdoctoral research fellowship of at least 2 years abroad or at a different institution than where the PhD or MD/PhD was completed
  • High level of proficiency in both written and spoken German and English (equivalent to proficiency level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)


The ideal candidate has the following profile:

  • Previous research expertise in cancer biology and pathophysiology and ideally experience with in vivo and primary cancer cell research
  • Lead authorship in influential publications and/or successful patent applications
  • Willingness to cooperate, open-mindedness and ability to work in a team
  • Communication and social skills
  • Outstanding level of motivation
  • Systematic and analytical mindset, excellent organizational skills
  • Responsible work habits, resilience and problem-solving skills

Classification in employment group A2 according to the collective agreement for university employees.
