Focus: Soft tissue tumors are extremely rare. The rapid developments in molecular pathology have massively influenced sarcoma research and diagnostics. The focus of the working group is on the one hand in applied clinical research and on the other hand in basic research. The clinical research projects focus on rare tumor entities, description of the morphological peculiarities with focus on tumor heterogeneity and molecular classification. In basic research, the focus is on establishing cell cultures, alternative cell models and animal models for rare sarcomas (cooperation with Prof. Rinner). The aim is to better understand the pathogenesis and tumor heterogeneity of sarcomas and to establish alternative therapy concepts.
Networking: Within the Diagnostics and Research Center for Molecular Biomedicine, we work together with the Diagnostics and Research Institute for Pathology (AG K. Kashofer) and the Diagnostics and Research Institute for Human Genetics (AG E. Heitzer and S. Hasenleithner). We also cooperate with various organizational units within the Med Uni Graz: ZMF (AG B. Rinner), orthopedics (A. Leithner, S. Scheipl, M. Bergovec, J. Friesenbichler, M. Smolle, A. Dimosthenis), oncology (J Szkandera, M. Pichler), radiology (J. Igrec), histology (A. El Helibi, D. Brieslinger). Our external cooperation partners are: Vienna General Hospital (T. Brodowicz), Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston (C. Fletcher), University of Miami, Miami (AE.
